Trump Netanyahu Meeting: Shocking Disdain for Protocol and Iran Nuclear Threats (2026)

Donald Trump's unconventional approach to foreign policy was on full display during Benjamin Netanyahu's recent visit to Mar-a-Lago, offering a glimpse into a world where diplomatic norms take a backseat.

During Netanyahu's fifth visit to the White House in just eleven months, Trump's actions painted a vivid picture of his disregard for traditional diplomatic protocol.

In a casual 15-minute press conference, Trump's initial greeting to the Israeli Prime Minister was a dismissive, "Do you recognize this guy?" He then proceeded to disregard diplomatic conventions by stating his immediate support for Netanyahu if he ordered another attack on Iran's nuclear facilities. Furthermore, he revealed he had personally asked Israel’s president, Isaac Herzog, to pardon Netanyahu in a bribery and corruption trial.

But here's where it gets controversial... Trump seemed to accept Russia's claim that Ukraine had attacked Vladimir Putin's residence, despite lacking independent U.S. intelligence confirmation. He even appeared to favor the Russian president's word, even though Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy, whom Trump had hosted the previous day, called the story a "lie."

Trump also highlighted his relationship with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who has often criticized Netanyahu. The Israeli leader is firmly against Turkish involvement in the fragile peace settlement and rebuilding of Gaza. Netanyahu, however, maintained a composed demeanor, publicly praising Trump as the best friend Israel has ever had among U.S. presidents.

At a subsequent lunch, Netanyahu flattered Trump by suggesting he would be the first non-Israeli to receive the Israel Prize, the country's highest cultural honor. Trump reciprocated with an even more effusive tribute, claiming Israel might not exist today if led by any other prime minister.

And this is the part most people miss... The meeting occurred amid underlying tensions. The White House is trying to push Netanyahu to the second phase of Trump’s Gaza peace plan, while Netanyahu hesitates because Hamas hasn't been properly disarmed. Trump acknowledged the need to disarm Hamas but seemed less concerned about when the reconstruction of Gaza would begin.

Trump's statements on Iran are also noteworthy. He ordered strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities last June after initial Israeli attacks, yet he has repeatedly insisted that the U.S. action “obliterated” Iran’s nuclear capabilities.

When asked if he would support Israeli strikes if no deal was reached, Trump responded, "If they continue with [ballistic] missiles, yes; the nuclear [program]? Fast." He also hinted at a potential U.S. attack if Iran resumed its nuclear program. However, he drew the line at regime change, which Israel seemed to be aiming for last summer.

Trump's message on Syria and its president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, was also telling. Despite al-Sharaa's past and Israel's explicit hostility towards his regime, Trump expressed hope for a positive relationship between Netanyahu and Syria, stating that the new Syrian president is "a tough cookie."
