TotalEnergies, a French oil giant, has recently secured a significant position in Namibia's energy sector. The company has acquired a 42.5% operated interest in the PEL104 exploration license, a move that positions them to potentially become the first to produce oil in the country by the end of the decade. This strategic expansion comes as TotalEnergies aims to capitalize on Namibia's abundant natural resources, specifically targeting the Venus development and the recently discovered Mopane field.
The Venus development, located near the PEL104 license, has a capacity of 150,000 barrels per day. TotalEnergies already holds an operating 40% stake in the Mopane discovery, which is estimated to contain over 10 billion barrels of oil. This acquisition from Galp last year further solidifies TotalEnergies' commitment to the region.
TotalEnergies' President of Exploration and Production, Nicolas Terraz, expressed enthusiasm for the expansion, stating, 'We are very pleased to expand our portfolio and continue exploring the prolific resources of Namibia, in order to unlock further value that will benefit the country and all stakeholders.'
The company's interest in Namibia is not just theoretical; it has already initiated discussions with key figures. Last week, TotalEnergies CEO Patrick Pouyanne met with Namibia's president and Galp's chairman to discuss the development of oil and gas assets in the country. The focus is on making a final investment decision this year for the Venus project, despite the challenges posed by complex geology, which has led to increased costs.
To gain a deeper understanding of the Mopane field's resources, three exploration wells will be drilled this year. This strategic move highlights TotalEnergies' dedication to thorough exploration and its commitment to unlocking the full potential of Namibia's energy resources.
