Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to an immediate ceasefire, marking a significant step towards ending weeks of deadly border clashes. The conflict, which has resulted in over 100 fatalities and displaced more than half a million people, has been a source of tension between the two Southeast Asian nations. The ceasefire, set to take effect at noon on Saturday, will involve all types of weapons and military objectives, with both sides agreeing to maintain their current troop deployments without further movement. This decision comes after 20 days of intense fighting, including fighter jet sorties, rocket exchanges, and artillery barrages. Despite the ceasefire, Cambodia reported an airstrike by Thailand on a site in the northwest, raising concerns about the ongoing conflict. The agreement also includes plans for cooperation in demining efforts and combating cybercrime. The root of the tensions lies in longstanding competing claims over territory along the border, which escalated into open combat in late July. Since December 7, Thailand has reported 26 military casualties and 44 civilian deaths, while Cambodia has confirmed 30 civilian fatalities and 90 injuries. The evacuation of hundreds of thousands of people from affected areas on both sides of the border further highlights the severity of the situation. This ceasefire agreement is a crucial step towards peace, but the road to resolving the underlying territorial disputes remains challenging.
