In an exclusive interview with Pinkvilla, Samantha Ruth Prabhu opens up about the success of her latest film, Maa Inti Bangaaram, and the evolving landscape of mainstream cinema. She discusses the film's departure from traditional male-dominated action templates, her personal connection to the project, and the broader implications for the industry.
Breaking Free from the Action Template
Samantha's decision to take on a story that breaks away from the conventional action template is a bold move. She explains that it wasn't a deliberate attempt to make a statement, but rather an opportunity to showcase a compelling character with depth. The actress emphasizes the importance of moving beyond the spectacle, especially for women in cinema, and the need to focus on storytelling and character development.
"I think that audiences have changed; they're more open to fresher stories and they're no longer asking whether a hero is male or female. They simply want to be entertained; they want to be moved. If a character is written honestly and the story connects, people will embrace it and I believe that's the direction mainstream cinema is heading towards," she says.
Embracing Vulnerability and Uncertainty
The interview highlights Samantha's vulnerability in admitting her doubts about the film's success. She acknowledges that despite her experience and popularity, there are no guarantees in the industry. This candid admission showcases her respect for the audience and her willingness to take risks.
"Everything comes with a certain amount of uncertainty," she says. "No matter how many years you've been in the industry or no matter how much you're loved or how lucky you are or how hard you work, there are really no guarantees. It's not just me, I think this is true for every one of us here. So, when I said I didn't know if I could sell even one ticket, I genuinely meant it. It wasn't false modesty or something. It was genuine respect for the audience."
The Power of Storytelling and Authenticity
The success of Maa Inti Bangaaram at the box office, crossing the Rs 50 crore mark, is a testament to the power of storytelling and authenticity. Samantha believes that the film's success is not solely about the numbers but the emotional connection it has fostered with audiences.
"I think more than the numbers, what has touched us all is the way the audiences have connected with the story and the emotions behind it. People came out of the theatres laughing and clapping and I think that was the biggest win for all of us," she says.
A World Beyond Gendered Cinema
Samantha's vision extends beyond the success of her film. She advocates for a world where cinema is not defined by gendered narratives, where the focus is on good storytelling and audience engagement.
"My dream is to see a world where we're truly equal," she says. "I don't want us to keep saying women-led cinema or male-led cinema. Cinema is cinema, art is art, and commerce is commerce. Man or woman really shouldn't matter. If there is an audience for it and the product that we put out is good, it should succeed."
Personal Celebration and Future Endeavors
The success of Maa Inti Bangaaram holds a special significance for Samantha, as it is deeply personal with Raj Nidimoru's involvement. She celebrates the achievement by soaking in the love and gratitude from the audience and the entire team.
"Success is wonderful, but it also comes with this responsibility to keep telling stories that are honest and worth people's time," she says. "As a producer, that will always be my priority."
As Samantha continues to navigate the evolving film industry, her commitment to authenticity and storytelling remains unwavering. Her journey is a testament to the power of embracing vulnerability and the potential for change in mainstream cinema.
