A UK woman's tragic death from rabies, contracted during a holiday in Morocco, highlights the importance of recognizing the disease's symptoms and seeking immediate medical attention. Yvonne Ford, 59, died in Barnsley Hospital on June 11, 2023, four months after being scratched by a puppy on a beach in Morocco. The inquest revealed that Ford initially dismissed the injury as minor, cleaning it with a wet wipe, and only sought medical help after returning home. Her symptoms, which included extreme anxiety, hallucinations, and dizziness, were initially misdiagnosed as a mental health issue. It was only after a psychiatrist, Alexander Burns, was called in and learned of the dog scratch that the diagnosis of rabies was made. This diagnosis was further confirmed by research, as all of Ford's symptoms could be attributed to the disease. The inquest also highlighted the rarity of rabies in the UK, with only 26 confirmed cases since 1946, but the 100% fatality rate once symptoms appear. Post-exposure vaccinations, however, can be effective if administered promptly. Ford's family has since raised awareness about rabies and its global prevalence. Her daughter, Robyn Thomson, has joined Mission Rabies to immunize dogs in countries like Cambodia and Malawi, honoring her mother's memory and advocating for prevention.
