BBVA Unveils Its First Conversational App Concept Linked to ChatGPT for Italy and Germany
This move is designed to forecast how customers will interact with digital banking in the future. With ChatGPT becoming a major go-to source for online information, BBVA aims to meet customers where they already are.
The app lets users ask natural-language questions to learn about BBVA’s offerings—such as account terms, card types, or savings products—without needing to navigate through menus. The concept was unveiled during a December 3 event in Milan, coinciding with BBVA Italy’s fourth anniversary.
The initial app version focuses on informational queries about BBVA’s products and services in Italy and Germany. In time, the vision is for this experience to evolve into a digital companion that guides customers through important financial moments with clear, conversational guidance that simplifies tough decisions, reflecting BBVA’s commitment to innovation.
“Our digital banks in Italy and Germany have raised the bar for innovation. Integrating BBVA with ChatGPT signals a new era where AI becomes part of everyday banking, helping customers manage their finances more naturally and intelligently,” said Murat Kalkan, Global Head of Digital Banks at BBVA.
This initiative results from BBVA’s strategic partnership with OpenAI, which has positioned the bank as a leader in adopting generative AI. Beyond testing the GPT-5 model, BBVA recently expanded its use of AI by distributing 11,000 ChatGPT Enterprise licenses to staff, aimed at boosting productivity and accelerating internal innovation.
“BBVA’s exploration places it among the early adopters worldwide experimenting with banking services inside ChatGPT. This demonstration reinforces BBVA as a forward-thinking company shaping the future of banking through cutting-edge technology,” commented Matt Weaver, Head of EMEA Solutions Engineering at OpenAI.
The apps are currently available to all logged-in ChatGPT users outside the EU. OpenAI has said EU availability is forthcoming and will provide guidance on how to submit apps for review by year’s end.
With this milestone, BBVA Italy and BBVA Germany—BBVA Group’s digital banks expanding its European footprint—lead the charge in digital financial services innovation as they prepare for a regional rollout of ChatGPT-integrated apps.
